SYNOPSIS The talk will draw upon aspects of Prof. Tim Ibell's inaugural address as President of the Institution of Structural Engineers with particular emphasis on the Institution’s new initiative aimed at helping students and graduates develop a deeper understanding of structural behaviour that will assist them as they embark upon their professional careers. In the second part of the talk, Prof. Tim Ibell will talk about developments in fabric formwork and the research activity he leads at UK’s Bath University. As a practical and aesthetically pleasing way of achievement in material reduction, fabric formwork has the potential to help reduce costs as well as the carbon legacy of new construction.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER Prof. Tim Ibell graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering in 1988. He then completed a PhD in prestressed concrete structures at the University of Cambridge in 1992.
In 1997, Prof. Tim Ibell joined the University of Bath as a lecturer in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. He progressed to Professor of Civil Engineering in 2003, to Head of Department in 2005, and to Associate Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design in 2008.
He has a strong research interest in the structural behaviour and retrofit of concrete bridges and structures.
