SYNOPSIS

A brief account of past flood events occurred in the Klang river basin is given. To understand the flooding problems, numerous studies were undertaken to identify the causes of floods and recommend various proposals to overcome the flood problems.  The implementation of the proposed mitigation projects starting from dam construction and river channel improvement to more recent project works such as the SMART project and the Batu-Jinjang Pond project were attempts to retain the 100-year flood protection for the city area and the results have been largely positive.  The recent flood study for the RoL project has identified further mitigation works that need to be carried out to recoup loss of conveyance of river in the city. Finally the way forward for flood mitigation in the Klang River Basin would depend on adopting an integrated approach to sustain its effectiveness.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Cheng Pek Siang graduated from University of Strathclyde, U.K. in 1976 with BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering. He started work with DID thereafter holding various positions from Design Engineer at DID Headquarters to Resident Engineer, and Senior Design Engineer at the state and project offices. He was later transferred to DID Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur in 1992 to hold the post of Senior Assistant Director (Planning & Design) for the next 8 years before he opted out of government service. He then joined Dr. Nik & Associates Sdn. Bhd. from 2001 to date starting as Chief Resident Engineer for Package 4 of Sg. Klang Flood Mitigation Project, then Project Coordinator for specialist input on the review of SMART Tunnel design to DID, and later as Senior Manager/Project Manager for various flood mitigation projects with the company including Sg. Golok Flood Protection Scheme, Water Quality Improvement and Hydrological Assessment for the Klang River, and Detailed Design of Sg. Kerian Flood Mitigation Project.
