SYNOPSIS
The Integrated Agriculture Development Authority (IADA) Barat Laut is the authority in-charge of developing the Tanjong Karang Irrigation Scheme located within the North West Selangor Integrated Agricultural Development Project. The Tanjong Karang Irrigation Scheme, covers an area of about 18,195 ha. Agricultural drainage areas fringe the irrigation scheme, except to the east, which is bounded by the Tanjong Karang peat swamp. The irrigation scheme, extends in a northwest -southeast direction over a length of 40 km along the coast with a width of 5 km on average. The bulk of the irrigation supply is diverted from the Bernam River Headworks (BRH), located about 130 km upstream of the Sg. Bernam estuary. Supplies are augmented by the Bagan Terap pumphouse, situated further downstream. The 15 km long feeder canal from the BRH flows through the Tanjong Karang swamp into the Sg. Tengi and thence into the main canal. The focus of IADA is to increase cropping intensities, per hectare yields and ensure more reliability of water availability to ensure lower instances of water stress on crops. With improvements and modernisation of the infrastructure, and improved water control and management, it will be possible to increase the cropping intensity to 200% (Double cropping).
