SYNOPSIS

ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organization of 10 countries in SEA with a combined population of over 625 million people and GDP more than US2.4 trillion in 2013. The establishment of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 was formalised in 2007 with the objective to make ASEAN a more dynamic region to compete in the global supply chain and to remain an attractive base for foreign direct investment. The five core elements of “Single Market and Production Base” are free flow of goods, free flow od services, free flow of investment, freer flow of capital and free flow of skilled labour.
Studies by the Asian Development Bank had identified infrastructure deficit across the emerging markets in Asia to be approximately US$8 trillion from 2010 to 2020. In order to maintain current levels of economic growth in the region, there is a need for more investment for infrastructure, especially for transportation networks as key ingredients for economic growth. As other ASEAN countries prepared themselves towards AEC, where do we stand today in our readiness to face the local and regional markets in the highway and transportation industry? What are the opportunities for Malaysia?
The speaker is a member of the Study Team undertaking a review of the National Physical Plan (RFN3) that sets out the national strategic spatial planning policies and measures in respect to the general direction and broad pattern of the land use and physical development and conservation in Malaysia in 2020. In this talk, he will present some examples of strategic approaches and initiatives identified in the AEC Blueprint for accelerating the development of transportation and logistics industry in the region. He will discuss on national transport policies and integrated land use transport strategies that should we adopt in order to leverage on our existing strength and potentials to benefit from the development of the transportation and logistic systems to serve AEC beyond 2015.
