SYNOPSIS

In the current environment, projects are found everywhere and the success rates are quite unclear as most outcomes of projects are not reported to the general public. Those that do, indicates cost overruns, time overruns and scope overruns. These are the tell tale of project management failure. The root cause and actual reasons for such failure need to be scrutinized and weeded out. Among the reasons or cause of project failure is the project management team itself and this is a human issue. Leadership is a age old competency that have survived through the test of time to be the cornerstone of success in many ventures including project management. Also true is the team that supports the project management. In this talk the speaker First Admiral Dato' Ir Ahmad Murad b Omar (Rtd) have had numerous experience in his days serving the Royal Malaysian Navy and as a consulting marine engineer in projects after his retirement. He will unfold the intricacies of leadership and teambuilding and demonstrate its impact to the success of a project.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

First Admiral Ir. Hj Ahmad Murad B Hj Omar hails from Pontian a small town in Johor in the southern part of peninsular Malaysia. He received his early education in Johor Baru and later joined the Royal Military College (Boys Wing) at Sungei Besi, Kuala Lumpur. He joined the Royal Malaysian Navy as an Engineering Cadet on the December 1974. He then pursued a degree course in Mechanical Engineering at University Technology Malaysia (UTM) and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelors Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Admiral Murad then pursued a part time off campus Masters of Science degree course in Engineering Business Management (EBM) with Warwick University UK and graduated in 2003. Admiral Murad is a FELLOW of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) United Kingdom and currently as Council Vice President. In February 2012, he was elected as the President of IMarEST South East Asia Division (SEAD) for a two-year term heading one among six Divisions worldwide. He is also a Chartered Engineer (CEng) registered with the UK Engineering Council. He is also a FELLOW of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) since 2004 and had acquired his Professional Engineer (PEng) qualification in 1989. In 2005 he was admitted as a member of SNAME (Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers) USA. Currently in IEM he holds the post as Advisor to the Marine Engineering & Naval Architect Technical Division and Chairman of Public Sector Special Interest Group. Admiral Murad had been admitted as a Program Advisory Committee (PAC) in UniKL MIMET and also currently serving as University Technology Malaysia (UTM) as (IAB) Industrial Advisory Board.  In Feb 2011 he was appointed as Adjunct Professor for University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Faculty Marine Science for a 4-year tenure ending Feb 2015. Admiral Murad after joining the RMN in 1974 was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1984 and to Commander 1996.  After graduating from the Malaysian Armed Forces Defense College, he was promoted to Captain in 2001 and a year later as First Admiral.  He had held many positions including onboard ships as well as bases including as Director General of Engineering at Navy Headquarters Ministry of Defense Kuala Lumpur and as Fleet Systems Commander in Navy Base Lumut prior to early retirement option in 2007.
