SYNOPSIS

The Institution of  Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) in 2013 for the IEM to help MBPJ tackle the three main problems of urbanization – transportation, flash floods and dengue.  This seminar on "Green Transportation" is our 2nd program on transportation after signing of this MOU.  The main objective of this seminar is to help create greater awareness on green mobility solutions and to promote them in Petaling Jaya.  MBPJ wishes to establish a learned platform to engage all stakeholders in our Local Community in the formulation of sustainable urban transportation solutions for Petaling Jaya through dissemination of knowledge and Public Forum which are supported by the IEM.

In this program, we will have a key note paper on "Sustainable Living and Electric Mobility Flagships Initiatives” presented by En. Mohamed Azrin Mohamed Ali, Vice President (Built Environment) from the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia) which is a not-for-profit organisation under the purview of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia (KeTTHA).  GreenTech Malaysia was set up in 1998 with a purpose to catalyse green technology deployment as Malaysia’s strategic engine for socio-economic growth.  GreenTech Malaysia aims to position the country as a hub for green technology by 2020 and subsequently transform Malaysia into a Green Community by 2030. En. Azrin will provide an update of current and future initiatives for both Sustainable Living and Electric Mobility Flagships. He will also share GreenTech Malaysia’s efforts and experiences on the electric bus and electric mobility in general in his talk.

Local traffic engineer, Ir Chin Kar Keong from the IEM/Atur Trafik will be presenting his paper on "Paradigm shift in Traffic Engineering for Green Transportation – the art of moving people not vehicles". Ir Chin will describe how traffic engineers should look for creative engineering solutions to solve urban transportation woes.  He will present some examples of good practices for green mobility.

Major (Rtd) Chan Chee Sin, Manager EV of AMDAC will present a paper titled “Zero Emission For Everyone”. Major Chan will remind us that the energy we are using today are inherited from our ancestors and borrowed from our offspring, but do we realize that the human consumption of fossil energy today is 1 million times faster than the rate of their formation. With the dependency of fossil fuels increasing every year, we need to look elsewhere to supplement the energy used. He will highlight how AMDAC has set their sights in exploring new energy powered automobiles to ensure Malaysia automotive industry reduce dependency of fossil fuels and to reduce the Government burdens on fuel subsidies. With the introduction of Malaysia First Electric Bus in 2013, AMDAC has also set the benchmark of a clean and healthy automotive industry in Malaysia.

The program will end with a 30-minute Q&A Session to be moderated by MBPJ Councilor Ir Lee Suet Sen.
