SYNOPSIS
The palm oil sector contributes approximately 6% to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product and is a very important revenue generator to the Malaysian economy, and also provides job opportunities to more than 450,000 workers, both directly and indirectly. Palm oil produces many times more edible oil per hectare compared to the other types of edible oil, and therefore is a target of many smear campaigns and is often labelled as a “dirty oil”. By trapping and eliminating methane, which is a byproduct of the sector, the biogas industry has managed to help reduce the carbon footprint of the palm oil sector. The biogas industry has contributed positively to rural development by offering many technical job opportunities and enhancing the local economy.
