SYNOPSIS
IEC 62305-2 titled “Protection against lightning – Part 2: Risk management” is an important standard because it defines the risk parameters and equations in case of lightning strike and surges. It serves also as a basis for many other standards that incorporate a risk calculation such as IEC 60364-4-443 for LV installations, IEC 60364-712 for PV installations, IEC 61400-24 for wind turbines.
It is also a standard that has a long experience. It is based on a previous Technical Report IEC 61662 dated 1995. The standard IEC 62305-2 has already been published 2 times (first time in 2006 and a second time in 2010). We are by now at the edge of publishing a third edition.
This presentation will focus on the changes introduced by this new standard:
- Introduction of a single risk R instead of 3 risks (human beings R1, loss of service R2, national heritage R3). - Introduction of the frequency of damage to replace and expand the economic risk (R4). - Better definition of many parameters and probabilities. - Introduction of a larger range of voltages for connected lines, especially extended to HVlines. - Introduction of Thunderstorm Warning Systems to help reducing the risk for human beings. - Introduction of tools to better define the probabilities associated to SPDs. - Introduction of tools to better define the risk to the environment.
