PANEL SPEAKERS FORUM 1: WHAT’S NEW BUILDING OPERATIONS?

1) Title: The Mall of Tomorrow: AI-Powered Engineering Solutions
by Dr Mohd Azraai b Mohd Razman, Senior Lecturer,
Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA)

AI in Engineering involves the application of artificial intelligence in various aspects of engineering, leveraging algorithms and data to enhance decision-making and processes. In the context of shopping malls, AI analysis can optimize Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) systems, such as lighting and HVAC, by adapting to foot traffic, weather conditions, and occupancy patterns. Examples of AI-driven automation in malls include predictive maintenance for escalators and elevators, real-time energy consumption monitoring, and AI chatbots for customer inquiries. AI tools also enable inventory management, personalized marketing, and security enhancements.

2) Title: Updates and Changes in Building Code and Regulations
by Ir. Loo Chee Kin, Senior Consultant, Global Risk Consultants

There have been several codes, regulations, and standard updates and changes since the last PPK-IEM seminar in 2019. This session will highlight some of these changes from the various authorities, which could affect planned projects as well as ongoing mall operations. Those key documents and circulars from DOE, DOSH, ST, Bomba and KPKT will be presented.

3) Title: Operational Safety in Shopping Malls
by Ir. Chandrasegaran Menon, PPK Malaysia

Safety in shopping malls is always of paramount importance to mall management as they are responsible and accountable to both their tenants as well as patrons. At the same time, social media will quickly pick up the smallest mishaps which will result in negative perceptions for the mall and may result lower footfall. Our speaker will present best practices for Fire Safety and Preventive Measures for M& E Installations as well as new technology which will enhance safety for all.

PANEL SPEAKERS FORUM 2: SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE

1) Title: Case Study of Sustainability in Shopping Malls
Ms Jessica Jong, Head of Sustainability and Quality Assurance, Sunway Malls

Discover the transformative journey of shopping malls embracing sustainability. This case study explores innovative strategies that have reshaped shopping malls into eco-friendly hubs. From energy-efficient lighting and waste reduction to green rooftops and community engagement, we delve into real-world examples that drive environmental responsibility and profitability. Uncover how these malls have minimized their carbon footprint, enhanced resource efficiency, and fostered a culture of conscious consumption. Join us to learn how the convergence of sustainability and commerce is not only possible but also essential for shaping a greener, more prosperous future.

2) Title: Sustainable Facility Maintenance for Commercial Properties
by Ir. Tony Cheng Yew Leong - METD, IEM

Commercial buildings are expected to increasingly contribute to the growing demand for electricity every year. This escalating demand, primarily driven by HVAC systems, has significant environmental implications as it originates from the use of fossil fuels in large-scale power plants for electricity generation. Consequently, it becomes essential for engineers and facility managers to participate in effective decision-making procedures to ensure that HVAC systems in buildings adhere to optimal design and maintenance standards. Furthermore, it is critical for the equipment within these structures to operate correctly and sustain their efficiency. This informative session seeks to offer the audience valuable insights into achieving these objectives by maintaining system efficiency throughout the operational period. Additionally, it explores the utilization of the latest and emerging technologies to further enhance and streamline the maintenance process.

3) Title: Fire Safety View of Electric Vehicle (EV) & Charging Infrastructure in Malaysia
by Ir. Alan Chan, Engineering Consultant Dexalon

Electromobility refers to the growing trend and adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and other electric-powered transportation solutions. Several factors, including environmental concerns, technological advancements, government regulations, and increasing consumer interest in sustainable transportation options, have driven this trend. Despite the positive momentum options, there are challenges to overcome in the electromobility transition. Today, EVs are not only a symbol of green transportation, but they also present extraordinary driving performance. However, compared to the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEVs), which have seen continuous use and development over the last century, EVs are still far from mature, especially regarding their perceived fire safety (e.g., charging infrastructure). This safety concern stands in the way of the EV becoming the dominating transportation system.
