SYNOPSIS
Tin ore once a glittering metal in Malaysia, is showing some light again. With the tin pricing at all time high the question is, how many tin mines are in operation in Malaysia? What is the cause for the high demand of tin?
A brief history of tin mining and a review of the gravel pump method is presented. Although most of the information provided is historical in nature, the operations can still be adopted today. Malaysia has the technology and experience in alluvial mining . Procedure of applying a tin mining lease and license is also presented.
The real questions are is there any revival ; how much are the reserves and the possible areas of tin deposits in Malaysia .

Ir. Yap Keam Min FIEM,FICE,FIE Australia,C.Eng,P.Eng
Ir. Yap Keam Min is a professional civil and structural Engineer. His expertise is structural and foundation engineering, precast concrete piles manufacturing and hydraulic tin mining. He isa PE with practicing certificate of the Board of engineers, Malaysia. He is also a very experience tin miner and his family has been in tin mining since the 1950’s.
Ir. Yap Keam Min graduated with a B.Sc(hons) in civil engineering at the University of Southampton in 1976. He a fellow of the Institution of engineers, Malaysia(FIEM), a fellow ofthe Institution of Engineers ,UK (FICE) and a fellow of the institution of Engineers, Australia .He is a C.Eng(UK ), P.Eng (Malaysia), C.P Eng(Australia). A retired member of the the Institution of Professional Engineers, New Zealand and NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering.
He served as the chairman of the working group of Malaysian Standard MS1314: part 5:2004:Precast prestressed concrete square piles.
He has also written several papers on the foundations. He has given seminar for PKNS on precast concrete piling foundation ,a talk on the basic of earthquake for REDHA and several talks to a university.
KM Yap is the founder of Stresscon Piling Sdn Bhd in 1989, a company involved in the manufacturing of prestressed concrete piles.
