SYNOPSIS

Engineering education serves as a cornerstone for technological progress, enhancing our overall well-being. It arms individuals with the essential skills required for innovating,designing, and solving intricate engineering challenges. Given the pressing global issues we face today—such as climate change, rapid urbanization, and limited resources—engineering education lays the groundwork for developing sustainable, efficient, and adaptable answers. To stay ahead, it's crucial to evolve in line with Education 4.0 paradigms and incorporate emerging, disruptive technologies into academic programs. These are among the key topics that will be covered in the forthcoming discussion.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

YBhg. Professor Dato' Ir. Dr. Mohd. Hamdi Abd. Shukor

Professor Dato’ Ir. Dr. Mohd. Hamdi Abd. Shukor earned his Bachelor of Engineering(Mechanical) from Imperial College, London, a Master of Science from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK, and a Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan.

He joined the faculty at Universiti Malaya in 1994, ascending to Associate Professor in 2006. He was elevated to a full professorship (Professor C) in 2010, further promoted to Senior Professor (Professor B) in 2014, and attained the rank of Distinguished Professor (Turus III) in 2021, the highest professorial position at the institution.

Professor Hamdi has a wealth of administrative experience, having previously served as the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Universiti Malaya from 2009 to 2011, and as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) from 2011 to 2014. He took the helm as the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2019 and assumed leadership at Universiti Malaya as its 13th Vice-Chancellor in November 2020.

Nationally, he has held several significant leadership roles, including Chairman of the Public Universities Rectors/Vice-Chancellors Committee, Chairman of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), and as a Board Member for both the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).

On the international front, Professor Hamdi was a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) during the 2015-2016 academic year. He was elected as the Executive President of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) for the term 2021-2022 and currently serves in multiple strategic international university alliances. He is a Steering Committee Member of the Asia Pacific Rims Universities (APRU) for 2022-2023, a Council Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) for 2022-2025, and an Administrative Board Member of the International Association of Universities (IAU) for 2022-2026.

Despite his numerous leadership responsibilities, Professor Hamdi remains an active contributor to academia, boasting over 220 scholarly publications indexed by the Web of Science. He has an h-index of 39 and has amassed over 6,190 citations.

For his exceptional service and contributions, he was honored with the Darjah Johan Mangku Negara by His Majesty the King in 2019 and the Darjah Dato’ Paduka Negeri Sembilan, which carries the title of Dato’, by The Grand Ruler of Negeri Sembilan in 2020.
