SYNOPSIS
"Net Zero Emissions 2050" aspirations have become a global mantra for the COP (Conference of Parties) member countries to honour the Paris Agreement target of COP 15 in Paris in 2015 to keep the global temperature rise to 1.5oC by the end of the 21st century. Several countries have documented their aspirations and laid out strategies for successful achievement of their targets, while some have set their targets for 2060 or later.
Malaysia has yet to formulate a comprehensive formal NZE policy document, but it has formulated a number of government policy and advisory documents such as MYRER (2021), LCMB (2021), DTN 2022-2040 (2022), etc. that aim to help the nation achieve the desired objective. Some other parties have addressed the subject, such as the WWF-BCG report "SECURING OUR FUTURE: NET ZERO PATHWAYS FOR MALAYSIA" and Shell's "A Pathway Towards Malaysia’s Carbon-Neutral Future - the tree, the sky, the sun"
This presentation addresses the various documents' relevant contents in relation to a possible Malaysian Road to NZE 2050 policy/advisory paper from an engineer's perspective based on realistic logic. It also hopes to stimulate engineers to look at policy and advisory documents from engineering logic perspectives and to see how they can contribute to realising the desired national objectives.
Note: This presentation is entirely different from the presentation by Mr CK Tang on 28 March 2023.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. G. Lalchand
Ir G. Lalchand served TNB (and its predecessors) for a total of over 36 years in various Divisions. After his retirement he moved on to the EE and RE fields, including tasks for the Ministry for Energy (under its different names from 1999 to 2010) where he was actively involved in several DANCED/DANIDA consultancy projects and the UNDP/GEF supported MBIPV project, as well as the Pemandu led NKEA program in 2010.
He has been interested, and has participated, in several local and international fora on carbon neutral development options, and more recently webinars on hydrogen, often touted as "the silver bullet" for global communities to successfully achieve their NZE aspirations, whether by 2050 or later.
