BACKGROUND

The application of jet fan system for smoke control in car park has been replacing conventional ducted system in ever faster pace for last few years.  Thus, a guideline on this application has been issued by Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia (JBPM) at end of June this year,  This guideline is a very valuable tool to designer since application of jet fan system for building ventilation & smoke control is still a relatively new topic.  Even the Code of Pratice on smoke & heat control system for covered car parks of British Standard (BS 7346 Part 7) which had officialy included jet fan system (so-called Impulse Ventilation in BS), was only issued in October 2006.  JBPM’s guideline is the result of many months of joint effort in  research and technical discussion by a work group formed by JBPM, ACEM, IFE and IEM.  Representatives from PAM has also given their valuable opinion in the final draft of the guidleines. The purpose of this Talk is to disseminate information in this new guideline to fellow IEM members and brief illustration on various clauses of the guideline.  IEM Representatves to JBPM work group will try as far as possible to explain important aspects of it though we expect full coverage of such comprehensive guideline may only be possible in another forum or course that may take 4-8 hours.in future (now in the planning stage).


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Soong Peng Soon graduated from the University of Malaya in 1984 and has more than 26 years in the design, manufacturing, construction and testing of ventitaltion, HVAC system & components and general M&E services. He is highly regarded for his wide hands-on experience from design to start-up of many prestigious projects.  He often shares his experience with professionals in design & trouble shooting of HVAC & general M&E systems.  He is one of the IEM Representative to JBPM work group on jet fan system, Presently he provides advisory services to Malaysian and international contractors involved in prestigious projects in Malaysia & overseas. His knowledge in jet fan system was accumulated since many years ago with his wide exposure. He had assisted a major Malaysian main contractor in successful negotiation of a mega project in Middle East that had the one of world first large scale application of jet fans by end year 2005, even before inclusion of jet fan in document BS7346-7. He will be joined by other IEM Representatives to JBPM work group during the Talk.
