SYNOPSIS

The UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all, adopted by all UN member states in 2015. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice for humanity.

On the organizational front, we see that problems in business are becoming increasingly complex today. Sustainable practices in corporate and industrial enterprises are becoming more relevant by the day as human kind continues to live beyond our means in a world threatened by climate change and depleting natural resources. Production and consumption as an essential part of modern society will have to be reworked in order to more efficiently utilize the limited and depleting resources around us.

Sustainability is an increasingly relevant issue for every organization, and therefore sustainability management strategies and practices are of growing significance. Because many sustainability impacts are strongly influenced by operations management decisions it is critical that the operations management function embraces the requirements of sustainability management. This has implications for decisions and processes associated with all aspects of operations management including strategy, design, planning and control, and improvement contributing to sustainable operations management.
Sustainable in operations management considers the interplay of business and sustainability. It is the practice of managing an organization’s impact on the three bottom lines—people, planet, and profit—so that all three can prosper in the future. Sustainable management supports a business’s long-term viability, because it’s preventative rather than reactive. It can take many forms including investing in fair-trade products, reducing packaging materials, and ensuring humane working conditions at supplier factories.

This talk will look at the various aspects, concepts and challenges of Operations Management and how it can contribute to sustainability of an organization for the long term.
