SYNOPSIS

Transportation of hydrocarbon by pipeline has been identified as safest and economical approach for centuries. Offshore and onshore pipelines are expected to operate safely and securely in a variety of hostile environments throughout its design life. The performance of pipeline system is well demonstrated in the early stage of operation, given that they are designed and constructed to recognized pipeline codes and standards. As the pipeline ageing or sometimes being exposed to extreme conditions and various degradation mechanism when approaching or exceeding design life, holistic approach to assess and qualify the integrity of this vital asset become more prominent.

The formation of ISO TS 12747 on recommended practice for pipeline life extension has shaped the pipeline industry to manage ageing pipeline system. The aim of this assessment is to demonstrate that by extending the life of the pipeline system, the operator is not exposing society to unacceptable risk.

This topic will detail out structured and holistic approach to support the extension of the life of an offshore and onshore pipeline system beyond that indicated by original design life. The discussion will lead to main elements outline in pipeline life extension framework from recognized codes and standards and identify issues/challenges faced by pipeline operator dealing with ageing pipeline.
