SYNOPSIS

The objective of this Public Lecture is to gain and insight of how an engineer’s background, research works, interest, and commitment in cross-border international collaboration are able to make meaningful scientific breakthrough that benefits mankind.

The speaker will share his first-hand experience as a member of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration team and his contribution in data processing, validating and imaging, that turned information from raw data into the astonishing images for scientific analyses. Among others, the speaker will also touch on the use of global network of telescopes to capture images of the shadows of supermassive black holes and the study of black hole accretion and jet launching at event horizon scales.

PANELIST BIODATA

Dr. Kevin Koay Jun Yi is from Penang. He obtained his B.Eng (Hons) in Electronics Engineering and M.Eng. Sc. from MMU in 2004 and 2008 respectively. He continued his study and obtained his PhD from Curtin University, Australia in 2013.

Dr Kevin Koay has the distinction of being among the first team of international scientists to have made the historic record of capturing the first image of a black hole. He was, and still is, a member of the observing team at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, when these observations were carried out. It was an astronomical achievement that made waves worldwide when the news was released in April this year. The 37-year-old scientist got involved in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project after joining the Taiwan-based Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA) in 2016 as a postdoctoral fellow.
