SYNOPSIS
Manjung Five (M5) is situated on a man-made island at the site of Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station in Manjung, Perak. It is about four hours drive from Kuala Lumpur or about two hours drive from Ipoh. The Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) RM6 billion coal-fired power plant, commenced operations on 28th September 2017, three days ahead of its targeted date of October 1, 2017.
The construction of M5 in Lumut, Perak took 45 months and the 1,000- megawatt plant utilised ultra-supercritical (USC) technology, the current gold standard for coal-fired plants in the world. TNB worked closely with the appointed contractors, a consortium comprising Sumitomo Corp of Japan and Daelim Industrial Co Ltd of South Korea. The plant’s operator is TNB Manjung Five Sdn Bhd. M5 will increase TNB’s coal-fired generation capacity to almost 5,000MW, representing about a quarter of Peninsular Malaysia’s installed capacity.
TNB improves the efficiencies of its fleet of thermal plants by deploying the latest USC technology for new coal power plants as it was committed to adopt clean and efficient technologies in power generation. To-date, TNB owns two ultra-supercritical coal-fired plants, namely M5 and its neighbour, M4. Both are the first two ultra-supercritical coal-fired plants in ASEAN.The use of USC technology enables the plant to convert energy more efficiently, burning less coal for more power while complying with emission standards. The plant also meets stringent environmental standards set by the World Bank and the Malaysian Department of Environment (DOE). This ensures that the cost of ge¬nerating electricity is minimised and remains friendly to the environment and communities nearby.
For this technical visit, participants will be able to see the overview of the processes and operation of a USS coal power plant.
NOTE: The visit is strictly limited to 25 participants registered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please bring your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Safety Shoes
