SYNOPSIS
In the UK, the standard fire-test required by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is performed under a procedure specified by the ISO report ISO2685 (1992). A propane-air burner is widely used in the UK to certify critical engine components exposed to the danger of fire in an aircraft engine. The alternative, Kerosene burner, which is frequently used in the US, is also specified in ISO2685 (1992) and in FAA report AC-20-135 (1990). An example of a standard propane burner fire-test of an engine mount ring is shown above. Rear engine mount-ring undergoing fire integrity testing at Rolls-Royce Hucknall using propane-air burner. We have developed the facility in the FIRETEST Cell at the Propulsion Laboratory Universiti Putra Malaysia.
SPEAKER BIODATA
Abd Rahim Abu Talib is currently the Head Aerospace Engineering Department, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Science at The University of Oxford in 2003 and B.Eng (hons) Aeronautical Engineering from University of Salford, UK in 1998. Dr. Abd Rahim is a registered Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate under the Board of Engineers Malaysia and a founding member of the Malaysian Society of Engineering and Technology (MySET). He is currently the Vice-President and Fellow Member of the society. He has authored numerous publications in the form of research journal articles, conference proceedings, patents, technical reports, books and book chapters. He is also recipient of several local and international grants, amounting to some USD 360,000 till date. Lately, Dr. Abd Rahim, has been certified as a Professional Technologist in Aviation with the Malaysian Board of Technology.
