SYNOPSIS

Carbon emission reductions that were generally agreed at COP (Conference of Parties) 21 in Paris in 2015 have apparently failed to match the desired targets, with the result that the anticipated temperature rise limit of 2oC by the end of the century is likely to be exceeded.

There is thus a call for the declaration of “A Climate Emergency” so that governments will accelerate their emission reduction measures to meet the desired challenging targets. The common “Holy Grail” is, nominaly, to reduce the carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Malaysia is lucky to have a dynamic and proactive minister at MESTECC (Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change) who has recently issued a challenge for the development of “Non-Large-Hydro Renewble Energy (RE)” to form 20% of the total generating capacity by 2025.

Is this target realistic and can it be achieved? What are the pragmatic options for Malaysia to embark on to meet the YBM's challenging target for RE? This presentation will introduce the potential, and more importantly, economically viable options to not only meet the YBM's challenge, but also to sustain that trend over the longer term.

This is a challenge for Malaysian engineers and the related business entities involved to tackle for the good health of the planet for our future generations.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir G. Lalchand is a Practicing Professional Engineeer and is also a Fellow of the Akademi Sains Malaysia (ASM) and the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET).

He served the local utility in its various forms (TNB, LLN & CEB) for over 36 years, including on contract basis up to end of 1999, after his mandatory retirement on age basis in 1994. He has since then been active in the Energy Efficiency (EE), RE and Green Buildings fields under international assistance projects such as those suppported by the Danish government (DANCED & DANIDA) and UNDP/GEF. He is still passionate about these sustainabillity issues and hopes that his sharing of experience can help increase the participants' appreciation of the global Climate Change concerns and what we can do as our bit to help “Planet Earth” remain a conducive habitat for our future generations.

In case you need it, here are the accronyms:
DANIDA – Danish International Development Assistance;
DANCED – Danish Cooperation for Environment and Development;
UNDP/GEF – United Nations Development Program/Global Environment Facility
