Abstract

Over the years, it has been observed that many graduate engineers are unable to present themselves for the Professional Interview (PI) conducted by the IEM because they possess insufficient design experience, which is a prerequisite. This intensive design course will therefore prepare potential candidates for the said PI.

Course Overview

This course is to provide the candidate the knowledge to design electrical distribution system for domestic, commercial and industrial installations to ensure safety and proper functioning, and comply with the requirements of international design standards.

Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are listed below.
1. Design the electrical services and distribution system for domestic, industrial and
commercial buildings complying with the design standards.
2. Apply international standards for the design and selection of electrical equipment
    for the intended use.
3. Understand the safety and functional requirements for electrical installations.
4. Identify the role of the design in the buildings and industrial processes.

Course Format

The course consists of formal content presentation. The presenter’s style involves intensive participant participation

Biodata of Facilitator

Ir. Prof Dr. Lim Yun Seng pursued his undergraduate studies in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom, in 1998. Subsequently, Lim pursued his PhD at UMIST in the area of power system from September 1998  to  September  2001. In 2002, he worked  as a postdoctoral research assistant at UMIST in the area of renewable energy. In 2003, he joined Econnect Ltd, United Kingdom as an R&D Engineer specialising in research on the integration of renewable energy sources with the power system networks. Ir. Dr. Lim started his academic career at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in 2005.

Over the past 9 years, Ir. Dr Lim has secured 11 external research grants from The Ministry of Green Technology, Water and Communication, The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation as well as The Ministry of Higher Education for the research projects on smart grid and renewable energy. The total amount of research grants received so far is RM 4.33 million or USD 1.23 million. Ir. Dr Lim has published 24 international journals with the total citations of 300 at h-index of 8. He has filed 4 patents on his inventions. One of the patents is filed with the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office. Of all his 12 postgraduate students, Ir. Dr Lim has successfully graduated 7 postgraduate students so far. He has carried out 12 consultancy projects for various industries, universities and engineering societies with the total fees of RM 33,000.00.

Ir. Dr Lim won 16 international and national awards such as Gold Medal in 2013 International Invention & Innovation Exhibition, KASS Best Invention of the year 2012 and UTAR Best Invention of the year 2013. Dr Lim has consistently received good teaching scores from his students for teaching energy-related subjects in the undergraduate and Master courses. He is the Professional Engineer and CEng registered with Board of Engineer Malaysia and UK Engineering Council respectively. He is the full member of IET, IEM and IEEE

Ir. Lim Kim Ten graduated in B.E (Hons) from University of Malaya in 1990. He has extensive experiences in low voltage electrical installations of buildings, industrial, healthcare facilities, and oil and gas industries.  He is actively  involved in Malaysian low voltage electrical standard developments, especially low voltage electrical installation standards such as alternate member of MyENC: Malaysian National Electrotechnical Committee, SWO–Ej–TC1: Standard Writing  on Electrical Installation, Protection and Insulation, and Technical Committee developing Malaysian standards for healthcare facilities.  Moreover, Ir. K.T. Lim is actively involved in electronics, systems and PCB design engineering, as speaker in conferences and course instructor in specialised industrial electrical and electronic engineering. Besides that, he is a Professional Engineer (Electrical) BEM and also a Corporate Member of IEM and actively involved as;

• Chairman, Membership Board, Board, IEM
• Committee member, Training Board, IEM
• Committee member, Logbook Training Scheme Committee, IEM
• Committee member, Admission and Professional Training Committee, IEM
• Committee member of Electrical Engineering Technical Division, IEM

Ir. Roger Wong Chin Weng, PEng, MIEM, REEM, ASEAN Engineer is a Competent Electrical Engineer and an Electrical & Energy Management consultant who has accumulated more than 15 years of working experience with at least 12 years in leadership experience. He graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), and a Masters in Power Engineering from University of Malaya (UM).   He completed his Masters with thesis on the technical impact of connecting
large scale of embedded generation to the medium voltage network.

He has served TNB from 2002 to 2008 in various capacities, including Operation & Maintenance Engineer and HRD Assistant Manager. From 2008 to 2012, he served ALSTOM Power (Malaysia) in various capacities including Site Manager, Lead Electrical Engineer and Electrical Commissioning Engineer. In February 2012, head-hunted by Mun Hean (Malaysia), a solution provider in lightning protection, power factor correction, power quality and energy management, he was offered to become the Senior Technical Manager. Two years later, in May 2014, Pathgreen Energy head-hunted and offered him a Senior Manager role. Pathgreen is a solution provider in environmental and renewable energy sector. He was subsequently promoted to General Manager after 6 months.
