SYNOPSIS
Explosives are the cheapest and the most efficient means for breaking and fracturing hard rock into usable sizes in mining, quarrying and constructional operations. For instance, explosives are used to level uneven surfaces for construction of housing, highways and factories as well as other projects that provide better amenities for the people of Malaysia. Explosives are also used for the excavation of underground space for foundation of highrise buildings, LRT and MRT tunnels as well as diversion tunnels in hydropower projects. Explosives are also used for demolition of both old buildings and old structures, which had exceeded their serviceability lifespans. On a negative aspect, explosives could also be used by terrorists for the wrong reason to further their agenda.
Explosives are generally considered as security sensitive materials and many people had been killed while handling or using them over hundreds of years. This talk will cover the commercial use of explosives in the development of our nation. The presenter will also discuss the followings: • Current laws and regulations being enforced; • Requirements of a competent person to purchase, transport and handle explosives; • Currently available trainings and courses as well as in the future to cater for new technology; • Roles of both Competent Blasting Engineers and Consulting Engineer in blasting projects particularly near sensitive areas; and • Ecological impact of using explosives and mitigation measures needed to minimise its effects on the environment, and also the requirement to properly monitor them.
‘Jabatan Mineral dan Geosains (JMG)’ is one of the Government Departments responsible in regulating the use of explosives for commercial applications and is considered as expert in this field. This talk will also cover Regulatory issues on the use of explosives under this department.
