SYNOPSIS
Coastal zone in Malaysia is experiencing rapid development, with foreshore or offshore reclamation projects seen in Johor, Penang and Melaka in recent years. Coastal development may have an impact on the coastal processes, which may in turn affect the natural and built environments in the coastal zone.
This technical talk discusses the application of coastal numerical modelling in assessing the potential impact of coastal zone development on coastal processes, and to identify mitigation measures, if required. Starting with an introduction to the coastal environment and coastal management responsibilities in Malaysia, the technical talk will introduce coastal numerical models and their applications especially in hydraulic impact assessment. The legal framework for the impact assessment and government agency guidelines for coastal numerical modelling simulations will also be covered, along with a case study.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Tan Sin Nyap is the manager of the coastal department at Dr. Nik & Associates Sdn. Bhd.
Ir. Tan holds a BEng (Hons) in Civil and Coastal Engineering from the University of Plymouth, UK. Started his engineering career in the UK, where he practised for 8 years, he has practised in Australia, Malaysia and for a short period of time, the United Arab Emirates. His 16 years of experience in coastal and maritime engineering is predominantly on shoreline protection, ports and harbours, dredging and reclamation projects. In Malaysia, his notable projects include the port planning as well as the design of the dredging works and breakwaters of a total length of 3.2 km for the RM 1.8 billion Samalaju Industrial Port development in Bintulu, Sarawak.
