BACKGROUND

MIROS Provisional CRASE Crash Centre Laboratory or MIROS PC3 Laboratory is located in Melaka and was officially opened on 24 May 2012. It is the first vehicle crash lab to be developed in the South East Asia region, with an overall cost of RM 6 million, a considerably smaller sum than the cost of constructing similar labs in other countries. A regular lab would normally cost between RM 30 and 40 million. The construction of the laboratory fulfills the specifications and requirements deemed by ASEAN NCAP to be suitable for vehicle crash tests. The groundbreaking ceremony for the laboratory was held on 17 January 2012. The lab was then officiated by HRH Prince Michael of Kent of the United Kingdom on 24 May 2012, followed by a crash test demonstration. At its inception, 17 crash tests were conducted within the laboratory’s compound. Subsequently, it achieved the distinction of being Malaysia’s first full-scale crash laboratory and was then declared as the ‘Best of Nation’ in 2013.

Since 2012, ASEAN NCAP has been responsible for carrying out crash tests on new cars as part of its vehicle safety assessment in the Southeast Asia region. Within a span of six years, ASEAN NCAP has conducted assessments on a total of 77 distinct models of new cars marketed across the region, including the ones produced by well-known car manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Perodua and Proton.  To date, ASEAN NCAP has published 98 ratings from 2012. During this visit, ASEAN NCAP will be presenting its achievements together with a crash test demonstration of to the visitors.
