SYNOPSIS
Rail transportation is gaining popularity as a form of land transport for mass movement of people and goods to beat traffic congestion. This is attributed to advances in engineering and technology, like electrification, telecommunication, signaling and train speed. Of late, there are many massive infrastructure projects involving railway construction in one form or another, be it city metros like MRT or LRT, high speed railway and even heavy haul lines.
In the construction of these railway tracks, various forms of precast concrete have been effectively used due to their superior quality and accuracy. Besides the traditional foundation piles, viaduct structures and tunnel linings in precast, the talk will focus on precast concrete used directly for the railway track. Precast concrete sleepers, track slabs and other forms are now widely used for track construction. The talk will focus on their usage and trace the development and evolution of the various precast concrete systems for both ballasted and ballastless tracks. The technology is still evolving in all areas of applications, in tandem with latest railway technology. Various alternatives are highlighted considering the cost, durability, buildability and ease of maintenance.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Ng Kok Peng graduated from the University of Malaya with B.E.Hons (Civil Engineering) in 1981 and also holds an MBA in 1993 from the same university. He is a Fellow of the IEM, a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate registered with BEM, a Corporate Member of the ICE, UK and a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council, UK.
Ir. Ng spent his initial years after graduation with a consulting engineering firm working on both civil and structural engineering design and supervision of many projects. He later joined concrete products manufacturers working on cement and concrete mix design and precast concrete for both building and infrastructural works. He is a keen advocator on the use of mechanization and technology to improve efficiency and productivity in construction.
Ir. Ng is currently the Advisor of Eastern Pretech (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a company that manufacture precast components for IBS and for infrastructure applications.
