BACKGROUND
Interest in Science and Mathematics education should be inculcated from young. What better way than to start from children at their pre-school age, to enjoy learning these ‘so-called’ difficult subjects. Moreover, the National aspiration on STEM education has yet to achieve the goals set to increase the numbers of human resources in STEM fields and the achievement level of STEM education. Based on two successful developments of Fun Learning Toy Libraries at remote (2016) and rural (2017) schools in Kelantan by Adopt a Kampung USR team from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, where IEM-WE is a collaborator, this year IEM-WE will be taking the lead in setting up a ‘mini toy library’ at a pre-school in Felda Bukit Ramun, in Kulai Johor. The pre-school, Tadika Cilik Al-Fateh 3, Felda Kulai, Johor, has two groups of about 15 students each. There is no proper classroom except for a divider between the two student groups; and equipped with only the basic necessity.
The mini toy library that IEM-WE plans to develop will be based on the UTM Adopt a Kampung model Fun Learning Toy Library. The concept is making learning STEM fun through creative and innovative inquiry based learning. This program is in conjuction with WE-AFEO community service program, which will be in March, running concurrently in all AFEO member countries. Therefore, IEM-WE Section would like to invite members who are keen on charitable work to join the program. Members are welcome to help set-up the mini toy library. IEM-WE also welcomes contributions in cash or in-kind, such as toys, books, board games, big cushions, bookshelves and other classroom facilities. For more information please contact: yansly7@gmail.com (Dr Habibah Haron).
Note: The visit is strictly limited to only 5 participants registered and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested participants are to register online at www.myiem.org.my or register by returning the appended registration form before 10 MARCH 2018
