SYNOPSIS

Engineers, doctors, scientists, politicians - just to name a few, all have respective scopes and functions but one thing they have in common is their shared responsibilities towards society which is SUSTAINABILITY! Knowledge of sustainability is for everyone, regardless of career goals.

Sustainability is a worldwide issue related to every human being and it is relevant to all who consider themselves to be worthy humans but I feel it is no longer a focus for everyone. Everyone has a responsibility to protect his/her home and preserve it for the future. Ignorance is one of the greatest threats to our current environment.

Today’s environmental issues have created conflicts between self-interest and public interest. So, whether to retain resources, sustain the viability of our business, or maintain our current enjoyment and relationships with a natural environment, sustainability is essential to any long-term engagement. We must strive to meet today's needs without affecting the needs of future generations. With consumption and production, and with rising populations, planetary resources will not survive unless something is done to change the way we treat our planet. How can you, one person, help protect future generations of the world from the exhaustion of natural resources that eventually lead to self-destruction?

Consequently, sustainability is an urgent issue not just for you and me but for future generations.

Sustainability is the key for survival into future.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Dr Mazalan Kamis is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Institut Darul Ridzuan (IDR), a policy development think tank for the State of Perak. IDR Provides innovative policy recommendations to strategise socioeconomic agenda to various stakeholders in the State. Dr Mazalan was formerly CEO of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), an entity entrusted under the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) to promote and inculcate creativity and innovation among Malaysian citizens. Dr Mazalan started his career as a high school teacher, teaching Science and Mathematics for six year before he was transferred to Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Education Department as a Special Officer for Science Mathematics Unit. His teaching career continued when he joined the Ministry of Education as a Lecturer at Institut Aminuddin Baki (IAB) specialised in Curriculum and Instructural Leadership. Under the same ministry Dr Mazalan later joined Education Policy Research Division (EPRD) as a Researcher after he completed his PHD. He later served as a development policy strategist at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister Department as core member of Malaysian Development Institute (MDI) a think-tank within EPU.

He received his PhD in Extension Education specializing in Transformative Learning from University Putra Malaysia and a M.Ed in Instructional Leadership from University of Houston, USA, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from University of Queensland, Australia. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Cornell University, USA, where he worked on Transnational Education Project focussing on planning and developing culturally sensitive community development program for developing countries. He is an expert on strategy, innovation, creativity and social development and he has delivered numerous keynote addresses at conferences, conducted training workshops and seminars, and facilitated various public and private sector organizations to implement the Blue Ocean Strategy and Strategic Thinking and Planning.
