SYNOPSIS

Sustainable energy encompasses both renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE). Malaysia has made great strides in advancing the application of RE & EE by introducing appropriate policies and programmes in the country. These policies and programmes have met with mixed outcomes as we went through the learning curve. As the focus towards sustainable energy is gaining more attention worldwide, our country must also continue to promote the development of RE & EE in order to address the issues of climate change and energy security. With the advent of technology and changing industry & market landscapes, it is time for Malaysia to re-visit the current policies and programmes so that we can build upon our current momentum. This talk will provide the background and current status of the sustainable energy industry in Malaysia, and discuss the possible trajectories for us by introducing several policy measures and programmes.


SPEAKER'S BIODATA

Ir. Akmal Rahimi Abu Samah is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia. He earned his Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Bristol, UK. He started his career in Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), where he was involved in various power plant, substation, co-generation and other energy-related projects.

After 14 years with TNB, Ir. Akmal joined a few consultancy practices where he undertook projects in the fields of power distribution system, renewable energy, energy efficiency and cooling systems. Prior to joining SEDA Malaysia, Ir. Akmal was General Manager in the Special Projects Division at Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB). Ir. Akmal is a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM), a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and holds a Competent Electrical Engineer certificate from the Energy Commission (EC), Malaysia.
