SYNOPSIS

This Year August 8th, ASEAN celebrated its 50th Anniversary. In the half a century of its existence, the original ASEAN 5 became ASEAN 6, then ASEAN 10 towards the end of the last millennium. In the mix of things, to remain intact and relevant over the test of time for ASEAN to reach its ‘Golden’ status is something to celebrate – not withstanding ASEAN skeptics. Reason: the enhanced opportunities of tapping into the Global Value Chains (GVCs) via the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) that will progressively become a seamless common market and borderless production base; unified by standards driven ‘Good Regulatory Practices’ based ASEAN Connectivity.

What will be the next 50 years like, when ASEAN celebrates its Centennial in 2067? That shall be for today’s Millennial to determine. To chart the Future, one must know the Past; understand related History and appreciate the Paradigm of days past.

The presentation of the Caption is just that; with the aim that when ASEAN (or AFEO) YES stakeholders are better informed, they can and will make a difference in ASEAN; our community, our ‘Home’.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Rocky H.T. Wong, FIEM, graduated as an Electrical Engineer in the mid-60's from the University of Malaya and served the Malaysian Power Authority (NEB) for some 16 years before resigning to join the private sector as an engineering consultant early ‘80s ~ centering on energy, environment, power, process & plant engineering. He is a Fellow of AAET, TEEAM, and IEM.

In the private sector, Ir. Wong has had been active in serving the engineering profession; such as Past Chairman of ACEM, Past Chairman of MABCON, Past President: Federation of ASEAN Consulting Engineers (FACE), Past Chairman of the Asia-Pacific grouping of FIDIC; etc. Though retired from active practice, Ir. Rocky Wong continues to be resource person in outreach programmes to young engineers/technologists for professional Capacity and Capability (C&C) building. He is a member of BEM NMC, EAC and ETAC. Ir. Rocky H.T. Wong is a Hon. AFEO/ASEAN Engineer and the Technical Advisor of TEEAM – an honorary position for some 30+ years. He serves the Montfort Boys Town (MBT - a charity for youths at risk) for some 20 years as a member of its Board of Governors.
