SYNOPSIS

Industrialisation and modernisation has spread rapidly among Asian countries, including Malaysia. Consequently, this implies increasing energy use and increasing emissions from factories, power plants, and automobiles, leading to environmental problems. Motors are widely used and account for a large share in industrial electricity consumption. Hence, the energy performance of these motors has a significant impact on the total electricity consumed.
Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission Malaysia) has established the Demand Side Management Unit under the Energy Management & Industry Development Department to promote and regulate energy efficiency (electrical) in Malaysia. On 3rd May 2013, the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia has gazetted the implementation and enforcement of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for electrical equipment which must satisfy both the MEPS safety and performance requirements.

The introduction of MEPS ensures that the inefficient motors do not enter the local market and greatly helps to increase the market share of High Efficiency Motors (HEMs). Furthermore, financial incentives and regulatory policies are also established to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction targets.

IEM Electrical Engineering Technical Division, IEM Penang Branch & Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission Malaysia) have co-organised “IEM-ST Awareness Seminar on Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) For Motors” in collaboration with International Copper Association which will focus on informing participants about the overview of MEPS guidelines for High Efficiency Motors (HEMs). This seminar will bring together industry experts, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, plant owners, developers, engineering firms, and academic institutions, to benefit from large group gathering and focusing on the discussion of efficient energy management and waste reduction.
