6th IEM Research Paper Competition 2021
Organizer Chemical Engineering Technical Division
(CETD), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM)
Objective The contest is organized in conjunction with the 19th
Asian Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering Congress (APCChE) to be
held on 16 – 19 August 2022 in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia.
Chemical engineers from throughout the Asia Pacific region will gather to share
their insights and innovations in this event.
Eligibility
- The contestant
must be active chemical/biochemical/petrochemical/process engineering undergraduate
and postgraduate in public or private universities in Malaysia.
- The contestant
must be members (i.e. students or graduate members) of IEM. The
contestant can complete and submit an application for membership in IEM
together with registration for the contest.
- Every contestant
is only allowed to submit ONE paper for the content. The main author (i.e.
contestant) must be a MALAYSIAN.
- All
entries must obtain recommendation from main supervisor by filing up the
entry form
Instruction for manuscript preparation
- A maximum 20 pages manuscript
is to be submitted. Pages exceeding 20 pages will not be assessed including
tables and figures.

- For Undergraduate participant,
please submit to IEM Online Journal Submission System https://iemjournal.com.my/index.php/iem/about/submissions.
Please indicate in the cover letter that the submission is
for IEM CETD Research Paper Contest 2021.
- For Postgraduate participant,
the full manuscript is to be submitted to amira@iem.org.my / sitiaisyah@iem.org.my and copy to iemcetdcontest2021@gmail.com
via email attachment. Only .pdf formats are acceptable.
Presentation Three (3) finalists for postgraduate category and Five (5) finalists
for undergraduate category will be called for virtual oral presentation to
determine the winners for prizes. Important dates

The Winners of the postgraduate category will be given a free
opportunity to participate and present his/her paper in the APCChE 2022, while
still subjected to the acceptance of paper presentation by the conference
organizer. The winner is further required to provide a report to IEM, within 14
days upon return, for publication in the IEM monthly publication Jurutera. The Winners of Postgraduate
Category will be invited to submit paper for proceeding to be published
international indexed journal. The paper will still be subjected to ordinary

All finalist papers will be published in the IEM Journal December
2021 and June 2022 issues. However, the final paper publication still
subjected to the corrections after the reviewing process. The organizer reserves the right to substitute any one of the
prize(s) with items of equivalent value at any time without prior notice Registration fee Each paper submission is accompanied with a registration fee of RM50
as secretariat charges (SST not included). Please make payable to “The Institution of Engineers Malaysia”. Please note that the fee only entitles for
this IEM Research Paper Contest, and does not include the registration fees for

conditions
- IEM reserves the right to select
winner that meet with an appropriate level of quality.
- The Organizer shall not be
responsible nor shall accept any liabilities of whatsoever nature and
however arising or suffered by the participants and/or third parties
resulting directly or indirectly from the Contest and/or the Prizes.
Winners shall assume full liability and responsibility in case of any
liability, mishap, injury, damage, claim or accidents (including death)
resulting from their participation in this Contest, redemption and/or
utilization of the prizes.
- By participating in this
Contest, participants agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions, and
all decisions by the organizer are final and binding. The Organizer
reserves the right to change, amend, add or delete any of these Terms and
Conditions without prior notice at any time and participants shall be
bound by such changes.
- The Organizer decision on all matters
relating to this contest shall be final, conclusive and binding. The
organizer is not obligated to give any reasons on any matter in the
contest.
Other information Oral Presentation1. Fifteen (15) minutes shall be
allotted for the virtual oral presentation via Zoom platform and five (5)
minutes for questions from the audience.
2. The paper contest chairman
shall arrange a timing system, with the following characteristics: a) A Signal will be given at the beginning of the oral presentation. b) A warning signal will be given at the end of thirteen (13) minutes. c) A stop signal will be given at the end of fifteen (15) minutes. d) The contestant should cease talking when the stop signal is given. The contest judges will assess penalties for running overtime. e) The contestant will be stopped by the judges at the end of twenty (20) minutes if he continues past the stop signal. f) In addition to the fifteen and five minute periods, the judges shall be given up to ten (10) minutes to complete their evaluations between presentations.
3. Individuals asking questions
during the discussion period shall state their name and affiliation. If the
audience does not present any questions, the judges should do so. Questions
will be stopped at the end of five (5) minutes.
4. Demonstration or display
apparatus may not be employed as a part of the contest presentation. Visual
aids such as slides, placards, charts, view graph pictures and motion picture
films may be used.
Judging Papers will be evaluated and judged on the basis of twenty criteria.
In the nutshell, the judging criteria are related to the student's written and
verbal skills, emphasizing that the paper contests primary function is to
improve an engineering student's communication abilities. Judging Criteria Written Presentation Evaluation

Oral Presentation Evaluation
- Organization--has introduction body and conclusions with
transitions between each.

- Apparent technical and factual accuracy and grasp of the
subject.

- Discussion--judges should be prepared to stimulate discussion
