14th International Conference on Concrete Engineering and Technology (CONCET 2018)

Pre-Conference Workshop

Tite: Design of Concrete Structures Using Eurocode 2
by Mr. Owen Brooker
Time: 8.30 am - 5.30 pm
Date: 7 August 2018
Venue: University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur
Jointly organized by University of Malaya, the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara
CPD Hours: 7

SYNOPSIS

This   training course will enable you to understand the key requirements of Eurocode 2, through a combination of lectures and practical tutorial/workshop sessions with worked examples and problems to solve.

This course will introduce the code and cover the use NDPs from the Malaysian Standards as well as covering the recommend values for worldwide use. The course will cover the design of concrete elements for the following ULS phenomena: bending, shear, axial forces, torsion, fatigue. It will also explain the materials properties, durability requirements, guidance on analysis, serviceability checks   and detailing.

This course is intended for structural engineers educated to degree level, some knowledge of concrete design is expected, and awareness of Eurocodes 0 and 1would be useful but not essential.

POST - CONFERENCE WORKSHOP

Title Sustainable Construction and The Ability to Deliver Climate-Resilient Infrastructure
by Prof. Dr. Marios Soutsos
Time: 8.00 am - 6.00 pm
Date: 10 August 2018
Venue: University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur
Jointly organized by University of Malaya, the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara
CPD Hours: 7

Registration fee:
RM 500 (UM & UiTM staff, IEM members and CONCET 2018 participants)
RM 550 (Others)

Fee paid is inclusive of light refreshment, lunch and certificate of participation.

SYNOPSIS

This workshop aims at the development, training and generating knowledge exchange platforms for academics, early career researchers and entrepreneurs on sustainable construction and the ability to deliver climate-resilient infrastructure in Malaysia.

The proposed workshop intends to deliver new knowledge on

  1. Sustainable construction trends in the UK and how the knowledge may benefit Malaysia,

  2. BREEAM and other sustainability assessment schemes,

  3. ”Urban” quarries -construction and demolition waste being recycled and processed to produce recycled demolition aggregate,

  4. Developments in alkali activated binders including geopolymers - use of silicon dioxide rich and alkali waste streams for the complete replacement of cement for the production of “green” precast concrete products.

The use of local waste sources (e.g. rice husk ash (RHA)) to produce sodium silicate solution (activator for geopolymers) can further reduce the carbon foot print , pollution and waste, and deliver low cost materials suitable for the housing demand of a growing population, and e) role of emerging materials in sustainable infrastructure.
