SYNOPSIS

When the word “research” is mentioned, it is often a misconception that research happens inside universities and researchers will work in the campus, isolated from the industrial world. It is not the case since research also happens in the industry, and most often than not, shaping the demand of technology advancement.

Oil, Gas, Mining Technical Division (OGMTD) has lined-up a series of research-focused topics to explore the current trend in Oil & Gas research, to bring awareness of research work in the industry, which could shape the current and future engineering applications or solutions.

This is the 2nd series:

a) Mercury Removal in Oil and Gas.

Mercury, in all forms are toxic and found to occur naturally in trace amounts in hydrocarbon streams. The amounts of mercury in hydrocarbon can vary depending on the geographical location with Asia Pacific region having the highest mercury concentration. Mercury is unwanted in oil and gas industry due to its detrimental effect. This paper will focus on mercury presence in hydrocarbon streams, its behaviour and impact to the oil and gas industry and the removal technologies and strategies to tackle mercury in hydrocarbon stream especially natural gas stream. The challenges in mercury removal technology inclusive of technology scale-up will also be discussed.
