SYNOPSIS
The talk is intended to explore beneath and beyond the surface of agricultural biomass wastes to discover and recover their compositions and active components for specific purposes. The talk will focus on how suitable pre-treatment methods can be selected in transforming biomass wastes into diverse value- added products. Also, the sharing session will include selected cases of biomass wastes with systematic research approach in revealing their potentiality for many applications.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Professor Ir. Dr. Ngoh Gek Cheng obtained both bachelor degree in Chemical and Food Engineering and PhD degree from Queen’s University of Belfast, United Kingdom. Having obtained the PhD degree, she started her career as a production and procurement engineer in a diesel generator manufacturing company in U.K. for 2 years before returning to Malaysia to work in the education industry.
She had been employed by a private college in Subang Jaya for almost 6 years and was made the head of school during the employment. She joined the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Malaya as a lecturer in 2005. Currently, she is the Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Studies in the Faculty of Engineering. Prior to the current position, she was the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering cum the head of the Centre for Separation Science & Technology in the Faculty of Engineering. From July 2014 until December 2015, she had been seconded to the Research Management Centre of UM as the head of the Research Support Unit. Subsequently, she was appointed as the Director of Centre for Research Services, UM from Jan 2016 to Dec 2017.
Professor Ir. Dr. Ngoh has been delivering guest lectures, conducting summer courses besides organizing regional and international conferences as well as symposiums. Her research took off in 2006 with main focus on areas related to bioprocessing. Thus far, she has graduated 13 PhDs and 6 master students with more than 60 published ISI papers.
