Introduction

Public speaking is the process of communicating information to an audience. It is usually done before a large audience, like in school, the workplace and even in our personal lives. The benefits of knowing how to communicate to an audience include sharpening critical thinking and verbal/non-verbal communication skills. As part of our commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of IEM in year 2021, the Oil, Gas and Mining Technical Division (OGMTD), is launching a STEM based public speaking competition for primary school students (9-12 years old) in Klang Valley (Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan).
This programme aims to achieve these objectives:

 To improve and advance the skills associated with good public speaking.
 To enhance students development of poise and communication under pressure.
 To expand students exposure on engineering and science.
 To provide an opportunity for students to meet and encourage them to involved in extracurricular activities.

Competition Outline

This competition will be centered on the importance of engineering or science (or both) in developing Malaysia. The speech and presentation should be between 5 and 7 minutes in length and demonstrate the student’s subject matter’s knowledge, presentation skills including body language or props and originality. Rules will be based on International Public Speaking Competition format. Details will be provided upon registration

A list topics will be given during the registration period. Students may choose according to their liking and prepare for the preliminary rounds. List of topics will be provided upon registration. Each student presentation will be presenting online (pre-recorded videos) through the competition Facebook page, which will be evaluated by judges selected by the organizing committee who will make their final selection of the top 10 student presentations and prize winners. All participants will be accorded participation certificates.
