Abstract

Over the years, it has been observed that many graduate engineers are unable to present themselves for the Professional Interview (PI) conducted by the IEM because they possess insufficient design experience, which is a prerequisite. This design review course  is meant to better prepare potential candidates for the said PI.


Course Overview

This course  will improve  understanding of candidates in the following areas:

- General Infrastructure works
  (including water supply, earthworks, road works, drainage and sewerage works)

- Plan and design for the following:

      a. Water Supply Design to SPAN Guidelines
      b. Fire Hydrant Design (calculation of water pressure)
      c. Sewerage Design to MS 1228
      d. Road and Highway Designs to JKR Arahan Teknik  
      e. Drainage Design to Manual Baru Saliran Mesra Alam (MSMA)  

- Highway Engineering: Traffic Analysis, Surveying, Geometric Design
  (vertical & horizontal alignment), Pavement Design & Traffic Safety Audit


Course Format

The course consists of classroom presentations. Participants are encouraged to actively engage in discussions.


Biodata of Facilitators

1) Dato’ Ir. Samsuddin Ismail

Dato’ Ir. Samsuddin is the Principal and Managing Director of SSI Consulting Engineers Sdn. Bhd. He graduated from the University of Malaya in 1976 with a  B. Eng (Civil)  and an MSc (Highway and Traffic) from the University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom in 1981.

He is a Fellow member of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (FIEM), a Member of the Institution of Highways and Transportation (MIHT), United Kingdom a PEng with the Board of  Engineers, Malaysia and Asian Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE). He was a Council Member of IEM and still serves in the Standing Committee on Technology and Road Management for the Road Engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM).

He has been actively giving lectures to International courses on road construction and maintenance, organized by Malaysian Technical Cooperation programme for third world countries. He previously served in the Public Works Department Malaysia from March 1976 to March 1992 in several capacities from building engineer to road and bridge planning, design and maintenance all over  Peninsular Malaysia. From April 1992 to Nov.1993, he was Technical Director of Malaysia Airports Berhad.


2) Dato’ Ir. Ahmad Fuad Embi

Dato’ Ir. Fuad retired from the Drainage and Irrigation Department, Malaysia in 2007 as Deputy Director General I. He graduated with a BE (Civil) from Canterbury Uni., New Zealand in 1975 and obtained an MSc from Southampton, UK in 1986.

At the DID, he pioneered sustainable river management and urban stormwater management. He also led efforts to produce the Malaysian Manual on Urban Stormwater Management (MSMA) in year 2000. He is founder member of the Malaysian Stormwater Organization (MSO) - an NGO advocating Erosion and Sediment Control, Adjunct Professor with UKM and a registered Professional Engineer (PE) as well as a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) with EnviroCert International, USA.

Some of the projects he has been involved in are:

3)Ir. Prof Adnan Zulkepli

Ir. Prof. Adnan obtained a B.Sc in Civil Engineering (1985) from Memphis State University, USA and an M.Sc in Construction Engineering (1990) from University of Gifu, Japan. He is a registered PEPC with expertise in Traffic and Transportation, Civil and Construction engineering. He has also been involved in the following consultancy projects since 1986:

1.  Infrastructure design of low cost housing schemes in Bahau, Port Dickson and Seremban (1986)
2.  Road and bridge design of 10 bridges crossing Kanda River, Tokyo for Pacific Consultant Company
     Limited (1990 – 1991)
3.  Road Inventory for JICA Highway Development Plan Study (1990 – 2010) for Malaysia, Highway
     Planning Unit, Ministry of Works Malaysia (1992 –1993)

4)Ir. Mohmad Asari

Ir. Mohmad Asari obtained a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering (1984) from UTM, an M.Sc in Operations and Supply Chain Management (2014) from University of Liverpool and PhD in Environmental Engineering 2020) from UTM. He have been in the water industry for over 32 years. He also a Commissioner for Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN) from 2020 to present.

Currently served Hajara Consultant Sdn Bhd (Engineering consultancy) as a Director/Principal from 2012 to date, he is responsible for the operation and performance of the company. Among the contracts executed are:
 
1.   Study of Sungai Linggiu Dam Storage and Sungai Johore Barrage Operation (for KeTTHA and
      MEWR, Singapore) – RM0.5m (study only)
2.   Design and Supervision of Water Supply to Orang Asli Villages in Pahang – RM50.0m
3.   Project Supervision of Holistic Approach of NRW Reduction for KeTTHA – RM9.0m
4.   Feasibility, Design and Supervision of Kinabenua Intake System – RM5.0m
5.   Advisory on planning and monitoring of the operations of Sungai Selangor Dam, Sungai Tinggi
      Dam, Sungai Semenyih Dam and Sungai Langat Dam – RM0.2m (study only)
6.   Assessment and Safety Monitoring of Putrajaya Dam, Putrajaya – RM0.2m (study only), etc


5)Ir. Richard Wong Chuen Fun

Ir. Richard Wong is a Civil engineer with more than 35 years of experience in the industry, with 6 years in HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd and 15 years in Minconsult, both of which are leading engineering consultancy firms in Malaysia. He graduated with a B.E. (Civil) from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia in 1983.

His key experience extends to road safety audits, project management, road and bridge designs, junction and interchange designs, traffic light designs, traffic and transportation engineering, traffic impact assessment and traffic studies.

Ir. Richard is a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM); a Road Safety Auditor accredited by Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), Malaysia; Past-Chairman of the Highway and Transportation Division of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM); a member of REAM; an Associated ASEAN engineer; and was a participating member of the JKR Feedback Group which drafted the guidelines for the contents of the Road Safety Audit Report by JKR.


6)Ir. Manogaran Raman

Ir. Manogaran graduated with a B.Eng. (Hons.) Civil Engineering in 1985.  He is the Reicon Consult Principle from 1996. He has been involved in the design of infrastructure and structural works for the following:

1.    Mixed Development
2.    Foundation design for telecommunication towers
3.    Vehicle Underpass design
4.    Coordinator for 31 Tamil schools
5.    Temporary works for tunnels
6.    Factory, bungalows, shoplots
7.    17 storey Selangorku residential building
      
He also worked with Ihsan Team Consult Sdn Bhd as  Chief Resident Engineer from 2012 to present. He has been involved in design and build facilities for EC725 Eurocopter Kuantan, TUDM.  Since 1988, he has worked with various engineering companies such as MuMoorthy Corporation Sdn. Bhd., Seri Jurutera Perunding, Arup Jururunding Sdn. Bhd and Erinco Sdn. Bhd.
