SYNOPSIS

Common sense will say that after years of doing endless projects, the project managers should, by now, be able to get it right. However, that seems not to be the case. Hence, a macro approach will be taken to look at some of the obvious issues which has become lost in ‘professional oversight’ these days. In addition, an insight will be given to the mistakes made during the initial conceptualization of the projects, that only become noticeable at the later stages of the project execution. These mistakes made, are ‘non-recoverable’ and should be avoided at all costs. The solutions to avoid them are simple and it should have been practiced more often than not, but that is not the case. Therefore, the root cause or motivations behind these failure modes will be looked at in detail as well.

The requirements for the project management, end-user expectations and the very way of carrying out project management has changed over the years slowly like ‘it was like a frog being boiled slowly’. Fortunately, as it has been advocated by the speaker, the project management concepts themselves have decided to jump out of the ‘hot water’ with the 7th Edition of the PMBOK. Some of the reasons behind the changes in the 7th Edition will be covered in this talk and an enlightenment given as to why those changes were inevitable. The speaker will provide projections for further changes to the project management practices and explain the basis for those assumptions. In the near future, project management must comply to the ‘rules of the jungle’ and be very sure which ‘jungle’ it is in. Doing things for the sake of doing things, blaming policies, quoting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), rationalizations and ‘excuses’ will be a thing of the past, as tolerances to project management failures drop exponentially, if they have not done so, already.
