SYNOPSIS

The management of occupational safety and health’s risks at the planning and design stage is often more effective, easier to sustain and cheaper to achieve than effecting changes later when hazards become real risks in the workplace. OSHCIM guidelines provide practical guidance to the client, designer and contractor on the management of safety, health and welfare when carrying out construction projects. This guidance is for people with legal duties under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 & the Factories and Machinery Act 1967. The Guidelines On OSHCIM include the client, designer and contractor. OSHCIM details what the respective stakeholders must or should do in order to comply with the law as well as recommends duties for them such that their projects are meaningfully managed. Any actions taken should always be proportionate to the risks in the construction project.

The responsibility for occupational safety and health in construction is shared among all stakeholders in the industry’s supply chain. Stakeholders such as client, designer and contractor should work together to avert occupational safety and health hazards out of the construction industry’s processes and products. In collaborating, they should identify and eliminate or reduce, as far as is reasonably practicable, all foreseeable risks (not limiting to those identified at the design and construction stages) affecting safety and/or health of any person.
