SYNOPSIS
Landslide is one of the prominent geotechnical hazards, particularly for hill site developments. Conventional engineering solutions for landslide mitigation measures typically involve reprofiling of slopes with massive concrete structures such as shotcrete slab and reinforced concrete walls, where it affected the natural aesthetic values of the existing slopes and its surrounding. Green and sustainable engineering measures for landslide mitigation will be presented in this session. Recessed soil nails as part of the landslide mitigation measures were used to strengthen an existing natural slope with maximum slope height of 45m, without major earthwork and re-profiling of the existing natural slope. Soil nail heads were designed as individual recessed concrete pads set into the slope surface to retain the natural vegetated appearance. This provides safe, economical and aesthetically pleasing sustainable design. Natural boulders within the existing slope terrain pose additional challenges for the design and construction of soil nails. Ways to overcome these challenges during design and construction will be discussed.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ir. Kwang Kim Lup graduated and obtained his Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Malaysia in year 2012. Subsequently, he started his career in G&P Geotechnics Sdn. Bhd., a consulting firm specializing in Geotechnical Engineering field. Over his 8-year working experience, Kwang has been involved in projects related to foundation, slope strengthening works, soft ground treatment and deep excavation works. Currently, he holds the position of Geotechnical Manager in the firm. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineer (BEM), Malaysia and a member of the Institution of Engineers (IEM), Malaysia.
