SYNOPSIS

Constructed wetlands (CW) are natural treatment technology for cleaning wastewater using biore-mediation (collaboration between plant, fungi and microbe) method. CW for wastewater treatment are considerably less costly than mechanical treatment systems and have lower running costs. They can be used for a wide variety of applications such as domestic sewage treatment, waste waters and field runoff buffers, recreational applications, flood control and habitat enhancement.

CW utilization generates economic savings because they rely on more natural methods, they are less expensive to build and operate than conventional sewage treatment furthermore the purified water is suitable for reuse.

CW can help to create the awareness for local and community the importance of wastewater treat-ment. It also can act as one way to educate student from the university to better understand the workings of the treatment process. The creation of CW can also assist in changing the way people relate amongst themselves while at the same time promoting other alternatives of development.

Environmental Engineers can learn how to use Biology and the science behind CW to better treat waste water from the many industries at a much cost saving and sustainable manner. CW system can easily adapt what has been built and work along what one has thus very flexible in design and again able to keep costs down.
