SYNOPSIS

Extreme conditions assumed in the assessment of structural integrity may lead to unnecessary strengthening of local structural components that may affect marine installation’s global performance not only during pre-service conditions but also response behavioral and foundation capacity at in-service conditions.

These extremities typically imposed to account for uncertainties such as change in environmental data, variation in topography of seabed, fabrication and others that associated to the process plant of an installation.

Issues on major extremities will be discussed and its consequences on the design process.

An alternative approach is proposed based upon the concept of performance in terms of behavior, response, risks and safety requirements rather than using prescriptive methodology in tackling the issue.

Basic understanding of materials, design parameters and definition of risk assessment are to be properly defined prior to starting the assessment which requires input from Stakeholders. Optimization can only be ascertained only if safety and platform functionality are clearly defined in meeting minimum installation’s performance.

SPEAKER BIODATA

Ir. Dr. Rafee Makbol Mohamed Ali is a Structural Engineer with over 30 years of experience in fabrication, design, installation and certification of offshore installations. He started his career working in fabrication then had joined several design Consultants in Kuala Lumpur prior to pursuing PhD in Structures at Imperial College London. He then joined a UK Consultant in London as Lead Structural Engineer/Blast Specialist for offshore installations. He left UK to joint Independent Verification Body (IVB) in KL as Team Leader/Structural Specialist. At present, he is leading a group of structural engineers in detailed design of fixed offshore installations offshore of Sarawak.
