SYNOPSIS
Biomedical Engineering, also referred to as Bioengineering, BioMed or BME, is a multidisciplinary STEM field that combines biology and engineering, applying engineering principles and materials to medicine and healthcare. The increasing demand for Biomedical Engineers is linked to society’s general shift towards everyday utilisation of machinery and technology in all aspects of life. Biomedical Engineering is a broad field with different areas of focus. A few examples of some of the subdivisions of Biomedical Engineering include: Biomedical Electronics, Biomaterials, Computational Biology, Cellular, Tissue and Genetic Engineering, Medical Imaging, Orthopaedic Bioengineering, Bionanotechnology. However, the main focus of Biomedical Engineering in Malaysia is heavily related to Medical Device. Globally, the medical devices market is forecasted to grow at an estimated CAGR of 4.5 per cent between 2018 and 2023, eventually reaching an estimated US$409.5 billion. This talk will discuss the role of a Biomedical Engineer within the evolving medical technology landscape and what is the future of this career pathway.
SPEAKER’S BIODATA
Ir. Amirah binti Abd Rahman graduated from Multimedia University, with a Bachelor (Honours) in Electronic Engineering in 2007, followed by a Master in Engineering (Biomedical) from Universiti Malaya in 2016. Currently, she is pursuing Ph. D in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in the area of electromagnetic fields application for medicine. She worked in Ministry of Health, Malaysia from 2010 until current and involved in hospital support services and biomedical equipment installation projects in government hospitals. She is also one of technical specifications committee for medical equipment procurement.
