SYNOPSIS
Piles have been used by mankind for foundation purposes since prehistoric times; their behaviour, however, is far from completely clear and a substantial volume of research is being carried out on the subject. The field is in evolution with continuous developments in the technologies, in the methods of analysis and in the design approaches. In the lecture, some aspects of pile behaviour will be discussed with the aim of highlighting those crucial factors playing a major role when approaching pile problems.
