SYNOPSIS

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines to mimic human's decision-making abilities. With the growing importance of the marine sector,  Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been getting bigger attention in order to improve the traditional technology, research and exploration methods. As ocean science and technology constantly toward the great science and high technology system, AI has become one of the core technologies in many sectors for advancement. Marine applications of artificial intelligence have been further practiced and expanded in at least three major areas: firstly, the foundations of technical thought kernel, network expansion and intelligent navigation in the so-called “Maritime Internet of Things”; secondly, in the field of far-reaching sea exploration, unmanned probe (deep-sea robot) relied on artificial intelligence technology has gradually become a major force in international competition; thirdly, as an ocean information and management comprehensive integration platform, “digital ocean” is applied to crack ocean information solitary island, jumbled information and other difficult problems through cooperation development, function integration and affinity services, enhancing the public ocean consciousness. In this talk, we will explore to understand the various AI approaches and how they are and can be utilized to enhance many current marine applications


SPEAKER BIODATA

Mohd Rizal Arshad has been working at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Malaysia as full-time academics since March, 1999. He graduated from University of Liverpool in 1994 with a B.Eng. in Medical Electronics and Instrumentation. He then pursued his MSc. in Electronic Control Engineering at the University of Salford and graduated in Dec. 1995. In early 1999, he completed his Ph.D degree in Electronic Engineering. Mohd Rizal Arshad is currently a Full Professor at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USM. He is also a Profesional Engineer (P.Eng) registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia since 2017.
