SYNOPSIS

Over the years we have witnessed innumerable changes in the way we live, work and relate to one another. The convergence of the physical, biological and digital technologies produce innovations from the smallest genome to the vast outer space. Coupled to socio-economic trends such as ageing, the innovations have created, reshaped, augmented, and eliminated many tasks, processes and even jobs. It is predicted that 40 percent of today’s jobs will be threatened by 2030 and more than 85 percent of jobs learners will be doing then are not even invented yet. Women engineers are at the heart of many of these technological innovations such as automation, algorithms, artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things and cloud computing, which drive innovations in all disciplines, economies, industries and even in what makes us humans. However a major part of society risk being left behind, giving rise to greater inequality, fragmentation and even security concerns. Women, especially those in the B40 will be most adversely affected. How can women engineers help to empower other women to grasp the opportunities in IR4.0? Working effectively with and for other women in a networked multicultural world is an imperative that inculcates listening that is imbued with empathy, respect of diversity, civic responsibility, discipline and time management, leadership and integrity. Collaboration that transcends geographies, sectors, disciplines, ethnicity, beliefs and socio-economic status  is a collective responsibility for shaping a future that works for all.
