SYNOPSIS

Since its completion in 1963, this iconic Malaysian Parliament building is not deserted from various of renovation and upgrading works. After its last modified in 2005, this 50-year-old heritage building is still haunted with leakage and other damage issues.

This situation has forced the government through JKR to make a comprehensive study to restore the situation. In 2011, the Cabinet had approved an allocation of RM520 million for immediate upgrading and repair work. Refurbished works were carried out in phases and Phase 2B was among those planned to ensure that these legacy buildings remained relevant for another 50 years.

This project is a unique project because it involves the conservation and refurbishment work of an old building to meet the current needs of parliamentary institutions.

Phase 2B consists of;
1. To build a temporary block to temporarily place multiple departments in while the main block is modified
2. To upgrade the Dataran Parlimen in order to provide the best facilities during the official opening ceremony of Parliament session and upon receiving national guests
3. To do structural strengthening work to ensure the integrity of existing structures
4. Architectural works to meet the current Parliamentary organization
5. Interior decoration works to illustrate the image and status of Parliament
6. Conservation works to restore the original features of the design of several components such as staircases and surau in 1963 to meet the requirements of the National Heritage Act 2005
7. Upgrading of mechanical and electrical equipment using the latest technology to align with future technical requirements
This project has attracted the attention of various parties, especially Parliamentarians, as the 13th Parliamentary Session has been scheduled to sit in the Dewan Rakyat that has been upgraded in March 2017.

To achieve this goal, this project has been given priority by the top management of JKR and the project team has worked tirelessly to ensure the project is implemented in order for the promise to be fulfilled.

Various obstacles have been undertaken during the implementation of this project, among others, technical problems as well as communication between stakeholders and JKR. Nevertheless, with the commitment and sensitivity from all parties, almost all the obstacles and problems arising can be overcome together and the project can be completed within the stipulated time.
