SYNOPSIS

The Government of Malaysia has identified the aerospace industry as a strategic industry which has a wide potential in the country's industrialisation and technological development programs. To ensure consistent growth of the industry, the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030 was launched in March 2015 during the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition 2015 (LIMA ’15). The Blueprint has set a vision for Malaysia to be the no. 1 aerospace nation in South East Asia (SEA) and be an integral part of the global market by the year 2030 with an annual revenue of RM55.2 billion and creating more than 32,000 high income jobs. To further support of the aerospace industry, the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO) was established in August 2015 by the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI). The primary objective of NAICO is to oversee the implementation of the strategies and initiatives in the Blueprint. NAICO will serve as the focal point in linking the aerospace industry players, relevant Government ministries and agencies, and academia to collectively work together in strengthening the capability and capacity of Malaysia’s aerospace industry.

Ts. Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah is currently the Head of NAICO, an office under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). He joined NAICO since April 2016 after completing his excellent tenure as the Chief Executive Officer of Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC) from February 2014 till March 2016. Previously, he was the Head of Aerospace and Advanced Material at Malaysian Industry-Government Group For High Technology (MIGHT).
Earlier, Ts. Shamsul spent over seven years (1999 until 2006) as a Senior Engineer at Sapura Defence Sdn Bhd. In that capacity, he organised various business development activities, tender bidding, project & contract management including operation management - mostly in the area of Flight Simulation System and Air Traffic services. Formerly, he served Airod-Alenia Technologies Sdn Bhd as a Radar Maintenance Engineer during the period from year 1995-1996 and 1998-1999. In that role, he was responsible for the maintenance of Malaysian Air Traffic Control system, radar and communication system. In August 2016, Mr Shamsul was appointed as Honorary Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering by the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC). Mr Shamsul Kamar Abu Samah graduated from University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom in 1998 with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Hons) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. He also holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1995.
