Abstract:
Soft marine clay deposits cover large parts of the coasts along the Malacca Strait and this is due to the sea level rise in early Holocene Period. In the Osaka Bay in Japan, exactly similar deposits of soft marine clay are found along the coast and at the seabed where many challenging geotechnical projects, such as building the Kansai International Airport and the Kobe Airport on reclaimed grounds, have to be completed. The speaker has been involved with these reclamation projects on soft marine clay deposit in the Osaka Bay since 1980 and this technical talk presents some useful geotechnical tools to deal with such soft clay deposits; namely 1) The use of piezocone for site investigation especially to monitor the progress of consolidation, and 2) The use of finite strain consolidation theory to predict the consolidation of thick soft clay deposit. These tools are extremely useful for monitoring & analyzing how the soft clay layer consolidates and settles under the reclamation fill load. As many Southeast Asian countries are upgrading coastal facilities, the use of such geotechnical tools would be useful for the Malaysia geotechnical engineers to support such upgrading projects on similar soft clay deposits.
Profile of Speaker:
Prof. Yasuo Tanaka obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Kobe University Japan in 1970, Master of Science in Civil Engineering from University of Manitoba, Canada in 1973 as well as PhD in Civil and Structural Engineering from Sheffield University United Kingdom. He is now an Adjunct Professor at Department of Civil Engineering at UTAR Kuala Lumpur. In the past 48 years of his professional career, he has involved in both academic and industrial area in Japan, Canada and Malaysia. After the retirement from Kobe University as an Emeritus Professor at the end of March 2012, Prof Yasuo moved to UTAR, Kuala Lumpur to teach Geotechnical Engineering and Foundation Engineering.
