This talk
is held in
conjunction with the
National Preparedness Month.
The month of
October has been officially designated
by the government of Malaysia as ‘Bulan Kesiapsiagaan Nasional (BKN)’. October
13 had been declared as the
International Day for
Disaster Reduction, by
the UN General Assembly
in 1989. This
is time to
increase risk awareness and
disaster reduction, which includes disaster prevention, mitigation and
preparedness. IEM is proud to present
this talk as contribution to these causes. The talk
would focus on some of the efforts that IEM DDRAB had done for the 2017 coastal
flooding, in particular for the Selangor state. As new information and resources
for engineers and the community, this talk willalso cover some of the latest
development in the flood forecasting, the draft Malaysian standards on
earthquake and the hillslope risk mapping.
SPEAKER’S
BIODATA Ir. Loo Chee
Kin is an active member in the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). He is
one of the founding members of IEM Disaster Risk Reduction Advisory Board (DDRAB)
under the Standing Committee on Professional Practice (PPC), IEM. He is currently
the Chairman of DDRAB. He is also committee member also serving as the Chairman
of the IEM Mechanical Engineering Technical Division (METD), Committee Member
of the Fire Advisory Board (FAB) as well as serving in various SubCommittees
and Boards in IEM.
He is a
Senior Consultant with Global Risk Consultants (GRC) and before that he was a
Senior Engineering Specialist with FM Global. He has more than 20 years
engineering experience, from design to field work, as well as natural hazard
assessments. He graduated
from UMIST, Manchester, UK with a B.Eng in Electromechanical Systems Engineering
and prior to that a Diploma in Electromechanical Systems Engineering from Kota
Bharu Polytechnic in Kota Bharu, Malaysia. He is a P.Eng in Mechanical and
Electrical Engineering and a Member of IEM. He is a Member of IMechE and IEE, and
registered C.Eng.
In the
natural hazards field, Ir. Loo had done consultancy for flood, earthquake,
windstorm, freeze and snow in various countries. In the area of flood, he
advice project teams on site selection, building flood protection barriers,
devise flood emergency response plan, compile rainfall and flood data, and
