Classification societies are essential to establish and apply technical standards in relation to the design, construction and survey of marine related facilities which not only cover ships but also offshore structures. Classification addresses the life cycle of a ship or offshore unit from design to decommissioning. Only classification societies are able to class ships and other marine structures, while machinery and equipment certificates may be issued by class or other organizations and even by the manufacturer of the certified product.

This talk will explain the importance of classification, origin, societies and procedures. I will cover from the review, surveys and acceptance into classification, including the regulatory conventions.
