SYNOPSIS

It was reported on the local newspaper on the 6th February 2017 “Four killed in Subang house fire”, a very unfortunate and sad report. Have YOU wondered HOW safe is your house against fire incident? Should a fire incident is to happen, does the occupants in the house knows what to do?

It had been said that the general public tolerance of fire risk is rather high many would think that fire incident would not happen in their house or they have fire insurance of the house so there is no need to worry. In this respect when there is a Fire Drill rehearsal at your workplace one would notice the employees would take drill very lightly and are reluctant to participate in the exercise.

In the UBBL 1984 under Small Residential it does not specify any Extinguishing system while the revised UBBL (amendment) 2012 has now stipulated Portable Fire Extinguisher and even self-contained Smoke Detector. Some view this as a step forward to prevent residential fire others may think otherwise because of the lack of fire safety culture within our community.

The generally public must have a good understanding that any UNEXPECTED Fire will quickly turn into UNFRIENDLY Fire, in this respect we must learn to take measures to prevent any unexpected fire in the house. It takes time to build and adopt a fire safety culture among the public.

Gary is a member of the Building Services Technical Division and member of the Fire Advisory Board of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a Management Diploma from New Zealand. He is a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM).  In 2016 he obtained Approved ISO31000 Risk Management Lead Trainer Certificate from G31000 Institution.

Currently, he conducts courses regularly on the concepts and design in the area of Fire Engineering and Plumbing Engineering at all the IEM branches in Malaysia. He also conducts courses with Malaysia Institute of Insurance on these topics: The Art of Property Underwriting Profitability and Essence of Survey Report; Applying Fire Engineering Knowledge in Property Survey and Loss Control; Enterprise Risk Management & Business Continuity Management.
